Harvard Center for Geographic Analysis – WorldMap

With recent conversations about ArcGIS Online (here, here and here),  Harvard’s Center for Geographic Analysis announced WorldMap the other day.

The WorldMap team describes it as:

…being developed by the Center for Geographic Analysis (CGA) at Harvard to lower barriers for scholars who wish to explore, visualize, edit, collaborate with, and publish geographically referenced information.

They appear to be similar in some regards, users can:

  • upload datasets
  • overlay them with other uploaded files to create maps

But there are a number of features that make it stand apart as well.

Comparing WorldMap to ArcGIS Online and Geocommons

Some of my initial concerns about ArcGIS Online apply here too. Once the data is uploaded, it is siloed, it doesn’t integrate into an Enterprise. But that seems like less of an issue when it isn’t being marketed as THE solution to handle data sharing on the web. But the Enterprise GIS market doesn’t seem to be the market Harvard is looking at for this product. It seems more focused at the higher education and research market spaces. CGA is looking for funding to build additional capabilities, but those capabilities will be shared with all.

  1. Did you see an announcement? I could not find one, just an article in the Gazette.
